The ability to get help also boosts the odds that a senior will continue to live independently. The longer a person spends helpless, the greater the likelihood he/she will be discharged into supportive care. For elderly people who live alone, becoming incapacitated and unable to get help is a common event, which usually marks the end to their ability to live independently. Vienna, Virginia – January 23, 2012 – Alarm.com today announced the availability of the Alarm.com Image Sensor and Image Sensing Services with the Interlogix Simon XT control panels. The Image Sensor is a small, completely wireless device with a built-in still camera which enables consumers to quickly and easily view activity “snapshots” from their property via their smart phone or other device, while also providing traditional motion sensing capabilities required of a security system.
“With the launch of this new technology, we are continuing to offer our Dealer Partners the industry’s most innovative advances in highly sticky interactive services and comprehensive security,” said Steve Trundle, CEO of Alarm.com. “The Alarm.com Image Sensor provides a completely new experience for customers through the integration of motion and image capture with Interactive Services. We believe that it provides our Dealer Partners with the opportunity to continue to stand out in the market with another unique, high value and differentiated service.”
The Image Sensor delivers images that show what’s happening at a property, day or night due to its infrared LED flash. End users can track both alarm events and non alarm activity, as well as receive real-time email or text alerts of pictures captured. The Image Sensor’s interactive controls are all available via Alarm.com’s user-friendly website and mobile apps.
In 2011, Alarm.com executed a broad pilot of the technology with Pinnacle Security and the Simon XT control panel. With installation volumes dramatically exceeding the pilot test goals, the program showed clear consumer demand. Users appreciated receiving a relevant picture each day from their home or business on their mobile internet device, and the technology also proved itself capable of helping authorities identify a perpetrator when a break-in occurred.
“Pinnacle is extremely excited about the overall response to the Image Sensor, the impact to our business and the eager adoption of our customers,” said Pinnacle Security VP of Corporate Communications, Stuart Dean. “As a company, we are committed to offering end users products and services delivering the latest technology that keep them connected and aware of what’s going on at their home or business. Choosing an alarm company to protect your business, family, or home can be a challenging task. If you search the web you will find there are quite a few to choose from. Consider a few things before making this all too important decision.
Ensure that the home alarm company or commercial alarm company to be considered has the appropriate State License. Don’t make any assumptions.
Do your homework when choosing an alarm company. Research the brand of the hardware and it’s capabilities prior to just searching for the cheapest price. Some companies offer free promotional systems, which are a great option! These are not usually a hoax or gimmick. You are getting the bulk of the hardware up front initially for little or no cost and you’re simply paying for it over the long term with a slightly higher monitoring rate.
Consider asking your local alarm company if you can visit with them in their office. If they refuse or do not have an office, that is a good indication that they are not a professional security company and have no local office or staff.
Review the website for any security company that you are considering as it should contain valuable information about the company itself, as well as the hardware and it’s capabilities
Go with your gut feeling after speaking to the representative of the alarm company. Make sure they are knowledgeable and confident in answering your questions. If they seem like they don’t have experience in the home life safety and security industry, look again.
Once you’ve narrowed down your options, be sure to review the details of the proposal they have provided. If you take advantage of a promotion where the installation is free, be sure to consider all of your add on items, which are typically wireless at the time of installation to avoid future trip fee’s that can add significant costs to the overall investment.
Take advantage of the installation technician. Feel comfortable asking technical questions about the system they install. Have them program and show you how to change access codes, the time, etc. Ask to have additional window decals for the lower level windows and be sure your yard sign is exposed and can be seen from the boulevard. It’s likely an intruder would choose another home that doesn’t have the alarm system if given the choice.
Inquire about follow up service. Be sure to understand the trip fee’s and ask if you will call a local office utilizing their employee’s rather than a contracted service person. Ask how long it typically takes to have a service call scheduled.
Choose a company that is the right size to respond to your needs, to include handling emergencies. You do not want to be just a number.
Finally, consider the reputation of the alarm company. Check for testimonials and look to see if they are listed on reputable referral listings including the BBB, Service Magic, Angie’s List, etc.
By following these common sense guidelines, your search for a professional life safety and security alarm company should result in you selecting the right company to protect your home or business

This is due in part to an increase in cooking and heating fires. WEBCO cannot stress enough about how important it is to test all your smoke alarms once per month, and replace batteries at least once a year. Winter fires can easily be prevented! About 3,500 Americans die each year in fires and about 20,000 are injured. You can stop the fire before it starts. The following fire safety tips can help you maintain a fire-safe home this winter season.
* Make sure wood stoves are properly installed away from combustible surfaces, have good floor supports, and have proper ventilation so that the smoke can exit the home safely. Never use flammable liquids (such as gasoline) to start a fire or keep one going.
* Make sure your space heaters have an emergency shut off in case they tip over. ONLY use the fuel recommended by the manufacturer. Never refill a space heater while it is on or still hot. Refuel heaters outside, away from the house.
* Have your furnace and chimney professionally inspected every year and cleaned, if necessary. Chimney tar build-up is a common cause of chimney fires.
* Use a glass or metal screen in front of your fireplace to stop sparks from setting nearby carpets or furniture on fire.
* Never thaw frozen pipes with a blow torch or
other open flame. Use hot water or a laboratory tested device,
such as a hair dryer.
* Dispose of hot ashes in covered metal containers and place the containers outside AWAY from the home.
Be prepared for a fire.
One of the best ways to protect yourself and your family is to have a working smoke alarm that can sound fast for both a fire that has flames, and a smoky fire that has fumes without flames. Additionally, consider having a monitored smoke sensor as part of your life safety & security alarm system. These environmental sensors are being supervised even when your alarm is not armed. The appropriate authority would be dispatched in the event of an alarm caused by smoke. Contact WEBCO to learn more about these smoke alarms, called “Supervised Wireless Smoke Alarms.”
Make and practice a home fire escape plan and set a meeting place outside. Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two escape routes from their bedrooms.
“A working smoke alarm is like having a firefighter
in your house 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

It’s Almost Time to Fire up Those Furnaces for Winter Heating in Minnesota!
By Chris @ WEBCO | Filed in Home Security Tips, Home Security Watchdog, Residential Home SecurityWinter Furnace Safety Tips WEBCO Security feels should be on your list of priorities very soon.
It’s important that you have your furnace inspected to ensure its safety and that it is in good working condition. If it has been more than two years you should have it checked!
- Be sure all furnace controls and emergency shutoffs are in proper working condition.
- Leave furnace repairs to qualified specialists. Do not attempt repairs yourself unless you are qualified! Just because you work on your car, does not mean you should work on your furnace!
- Inspect the walls and ceiling near the furnace and along the chimney line. If the wall is hot or discolored, additional pipe insulation or clearance may be required.
- Check the flue pipe and pipe seams. Are they well supported and free of holes, and cracks? Soot along or around seams may be an indicator of a leak.
- Is the chimney solid, with cracks or loose bricks? All unused flue openings should be sealed with solid masonry.
- Keep trash and other combustibles away from the heating system.
Do you want to control those heating bills? Check out emPower our solution allows you to control several household items all from one security platform your smart phone or laptop! check it out on our website at www.WEBCO-MN.COM . Other Winter Fire Safety Tips
- Never discard hot ashes inside or near the home. Place them in a metal container outside and well away from the house.
- Never use a range or an oven as a supplemental heating device. Not only is it a safety hazard, it can be a source of potentially toxic fumes.
- If you use an electric heater, be sure not to overload the circuit. Only use extension cords which have the necessary rating to carry the amp load. TIP: Choose an extension cord the same size or larger than the appliance electrical cord.
- Avoid using electrical space heaters in bathrooms, or other areas where they may come in contact with water.
- Frozen water pipes? Never try to thaw them with a blow torch or other open flame, (otherwise the pipe could conduct the heat and ignite the wall structure inside the wall space). Use hot water or a UL labeled device such as a hand held dryer for thawing.
- If windows are used as emergency exits in your home, practice using them in the event fire should strike. Be sure that all the windows open easily. Home escape ladders are recommended.
- If there is a fire hydrant near your home you can assist the fire department by keeping the hydrant clear of snow so in the event it is needed, so it can be located.
Finally . . .
- Be sure every level of your home has a working smoke alarm, and be sure to check and clean it on a monthly basis. Better yet, choose a monitored life safety & security system which includes them; these environmental sensors are on all the time, even if your system is not armed. Protecting you if you have been over taken by poisonous gas and/or if a fire would occur if you were away; the appropriate authorities would be dispatched. Give us a call WEBCO can help!

Visa and MasterCard FRAUD – The Newest Scam in Minnesota and the Midwest
By Chris @ WEBCO | Filed in Home Security News, Home Security WatchdogWEBCO Security has learned that Royal Bank received this communication about the newest scam.

This is happening in the Midwest right now and moving. This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want. This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & MasterCard telephone Credit Card Scam works, you’ll be better prepared to protect yourself. One of our employees was called on Wednesday from ‘VISA’, and I was called on Thursday from ‘MasterCard’. Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they alreadyhave it.
The scam works like this:
Person calling says – ‘This is (name), and I’m calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460, Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I’m calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a marketing company based in Arizona ?’ When you say ‘No’, the caller continues with, ‘Then we will be issuing a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?’ You say ‘yes’.
The caller continues – ‘I will be starting a Fraud Investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800-VISA) and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number. ‘Do you need me to read it again?’
Here’s the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works – The caller then says, ‘I need to verify you are in possession of your card’. He’ll ask you to ‘turn your card over and look for some numbers’. There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the last 3 are the Security Numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card. The caller will ask you to read the last 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers, he’ll say, ‘That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card Do you have any other questions?’
After you say no, the caller then thanks you and states, ‘Don’t hesitate to call back if you do’, and hangs up. You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the card number. But after w
The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you’re receiving a credit; however, by the time you get your statement you’ll see charges for purchases you didn’t make, and by then it’s almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.e were called on Wednesday, we called back. Within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we were glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card. We made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number.. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card. Don’t give it to them. Instead, tell them you’ll call VISA or Master Card directly for verification of their conversation..
What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a ‘Jason Richardson of MasterCard’ with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA Scam. This time I didn’t let him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening. I dealt with a similar situation this morning, with the caller telling me that $3,097 had been charged to my account for plane tickets to Spain , and so on through the above routine..
It appears that this Is a very active scam, and evidently quite successful.
Thank you to the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce & Amanda Runnels for this article.

Questions to Ask a Home Security Monitoring Service Part 2
By Chris @ WEBCO | Filed in Home Security Tips, Home Security WatchdogIn the second part of our post focusing on choosing a home security monitoring service we continue our list of questions you should be considering when making such a crucial investment in your home and family. When you consider how valuable they are to you it’s not a matter of if you should get a home security system, but who should you trust that investment with.
WEBCO Security has built their reputation around quality technology, affordable rates, cutting edge industry knowledge and a highly trained staff that has become the standard for Minnesota families and trusted home builders statewide.
More Home Security System Monitoring Questions
6. Does the security monitoring service offer 24-hour a day, seven day a week protection?
This is important to consider because you want to make sure that a security specialist will be monitoring your home no matter what time of day or night it is. Don’t even consider a security monitoring company that does not offer this as part of their service. The main reason to use security monitoring is to make sure your home is monitored at all times, even when you’re not at home.
7. Is their staff well trained in security?
You don’t want to make the mistake of choosing a monitoring service that doesn’t have a trained staff. Otherwise, when help is needed, you may not receive it because they won’t know how to do their jobs effectively. Improper training is dangerous for your family, so always ensure their staff knows what they are doing.
8. How much equipment will I need?
Security monitoring systems vary according to your family’s needs, don’t feel like you need to start out with everything as some home security companies will try to sell you things you don’t really need. Make sure the company you choose carefully analyzes any potential risks and how specific equipment will solve your specific needs. You choose what solutions work best for you and your budget, so you get the security monitoring service you need at a cost that meets your budget.
9. What is their cost for getting started with their monitoring service and what is their monthly cost?
Everyone knows that this is an important question to answer. You don’t want to end up going broke to keep your family safe, you have to consider what you are going to pay and what is the right balance of security, monitoring, and technology to fit your needs. Often security companies will offer promotions where as you get the bulk of the equipment up front at no or little investment simply for agreeing to use their service. Much like the cell phone promotions where they give you the free phone.
10. Do they offer you free installation and equipment?
Because proper home security monitoring is an ongoing investment make sure you’re not spending money up front they could be putting towards your yearly budget. This should be an important part of your decision because if you decide to use a monitoring service and get a security system with them, saving money on the initial investment is always going to help you.
The economy and your own personal budget is always an important factor when making any investment in your home. It’s important to keep in mind that while investing prudently in a home security solution is important, don’t compromise your family’s safety to save a few dollars a month. The current economy and social political uncertainty has a great many people desperate and forced to make choices they would not normally consider. Add these people to the existing crime element and there has never been a more important time to protect your family and your property.
Questions to Ask a Home Security Monitoring Service Part 1
By Chris @ WEBCO | Filed in Home Security Tips, Residential Home SecurityReputation, experience and knowledge are all important when selecting a home alarm system and home security monitoring company. Knowing that a company has a solid history of experience in the field as well as customer satisfaction will give you peace of mind when talking to the company about your home’s security. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is one source to check customer feedback and a company’s reputation; however, online reviews, social media presence, and professional organizations such as the local chamber of commerce.
Home Security System Monitoring Questions
1. Can I install an alarm for a multi-level home or vacation home?
Yes, you can install a security alarm system throughout all levels of your home or vacation home in Minnesota or anywhere else. You can even secure a home that is built in-ground as well as out buildings too.
2. Will other people know that I have a home security and monitoring system installed in my home?
People, such as neighbors, friends and passerbys, may or may not know that a home has an installed wired or wireless home security and monitoring system. Oftentimes commercial alarm companies will want to place a sign in your yard or on your window, while other companies and homeowners do not want others to know. Besides the visual signs, people outside your family may not realize that you have a home alarm system since most systems are not visible to people outside your home. Wireless home alarms are just that, no wires around windows or doors for potential burglars or curious toddlers or pets to damage.
Many security companies will ask if you want signs to post outside your home to indicate your home is being monitored since it is more likely to deter would-be thieves to gain entrance to your home or vacation home in Minnesota.
3. Should I purchase a home security alarm system and monitoring from the same company?
Many security monitoring companies also sell home alarm systems, but not all home alarm companies offer a monitoring service. It is recommended that you also purchase an alarm surveillance system from the same company to ensure both the equipment and service are compatible and reduces potential problems.
4. Will pets affect a home alarm system when I’m not home?
Home security alarm systems have a wide variety of settings regarding detecting motions inside your home whether you have a pet, a toddler or fans running. Be sure to ask your alarm monitoring company how to set these functions, so you won’t have to worry about false alarms. Also ensure you test your alarm system with your pets inside your house, so that you can determine the most secure function.
5. Can I monitor my home such via a smartphone or computer or both?
Ask your alarm monitoring company about such wireless and remote monitoring features. Many companies offer emPower, which is like having your home’s security in the palm of your hands. With just a couple clicks from your smartphone, you’ll know exactly what is happening inside your home no matter where you are in Minnesota or visiting family across the country. With a comprehensive automation management system you will likely also be able to control your interior lights, appliances, thermostats and even door locks from any PC or smartphone. Ask your monitoring company about these features, and if they do not offer these services, then look elsewhere.

Does your energy bill have you hotter than the midday sun? – WEBCO has the answer to this burning consumer problem.
By Chris @ WEBCO | Filed in Home Security Tips
Soaring energy prices have homeowners doing a double take when opening their electrical bills.
Summer is well upon us and the nice spring weather that you had for cooling your homes with natural ventilation is gone. Now the HVAC system in your home is kicking in to keep it comfortable. Then you get your first electric bill, and you start wondering how energy-efficient your home really is. To help with this issue WEBCO Security has created a list of the top 10 things you should do to save money on your energy bill.
1. Invest In WEBCOS emPower Solution. A feature-rich home automation and energy management solution.
2. Keep blinds or shades closed. When open, the sun can really heat up a room. Turn off the lights. They add heat, just like sunlight does.
3. Remember that hot air rises, so downstairs rooms should have most of the vents closed, so the upstairs rooms get more air.
4. Know that the clothes dryer uses up a lot of energy and produces heat. Try using a clothes line instead. Also use the washer as little as possible.
5. Look around and see where you think cool air might escape. Any door that can be closed should be closed. That leaves less of the major living space to cool down.
6. Do as little major work indoors. Think about doing workouts outside. The less movement you do inside, the less heat you produce. Keep exercising, just do it in a different place.
7. Keep the air conditioner on the same temperature. Don’t keep changing it. It works better this way. Cool down the house early in the morning by placing a box fan in the window and opening up another window at the opposite end of the house, if you do not have central air.
8. If you have central furnace, keep the fan setting in the “on” position instead of “auto”. It will circulate the air throughout your home.
9. Leave the house. Its summer: go to the beach, etc. When you do go, make sure everything is off and unplugged (well not everything) but you get the point.
10. Open the windows for a cool breeze and turn the thermostats off. If it’s hot during the night sleep with the windows open. It feels so great to have a nice cool breeze going while you’re sleeping.
WEBCO offers Alarm.com’s emPower Solution built on our proven, interactive platform, allowing you to have complete remote control of the critical systems at your property with any Windows PC, Mac or mobile device. Now you can easily manage your lights, locks and thermostat settings from anywhere, at anytime. Even better, emPower provides you with convenience and the ability to monitor and adjust your energy consumption.
